When whispers take flight, secrets become song.

Every issue of the fortnightly pamphlet, written by the mysterious Order of the Nightingale, begins this way. It is not a mere scandal sheet, though it is rife with high society gossip. It is a radical publication focused on women’s rights and economic equality, ranging from scandals and advice to philosophy and politics, whose authors are never named and whose source has never been found.

London’s social season of 1813 begins with news of the infamous Miss Helena Lockhart’s return from Paris, where she fled in disgrace after an illicit love affair and stayed for the last three years. But rumors have brought her back — rumors about the truth behind her parents’ sudden death. And these rumors lead right back to her former suitor, Dorian Kingsley, and his father, the domineering Viscount Arthur Kingsley.

Rumors of betrayal, poison — and witchcraft.

With the help of her bluestocking childhood friend, Amelia, and the gender-defiant arms manufacturer, Kitty, Helena must delve into the occultist secret society behind the Order of the Nightingale, all while protecting her heart from the battlefield that is the marriage market.
